Tropical Cyclones are a natural phenomenon which occur in several places around the world including the Arabian Sea. Climate change has affected these resulting in less predicable weather patterns, tropical cyclones making landfall in different places and increased risk of damage.

It is important therefore to understand the causes and effects of cyclones as well as how people are responding in both the short in long term in places which do not always experience these events.

This unit comprises of two lessons:

  • Tropical cyclone case study
  • Sustainable solutions debate

They have been designed to support GCSE curriculum content as well as develop skills such as debating and synthesising information.

About Oman 3165 expedition

Traveling the coastline by boat offers a unique perspective - not only on the landscape itself but also on the lives of the people who depend on it. Stretching 3,165 km, Oman’s coastline is rich with remarkable features waiting to be explored, and what better way to experience them than by kayak?

This module draws inspiration from a 70-day, carbon-neutral expedition along the Omani coast in a 5-metre boat powered by Mark Evans. Through these lessons, pupils will examine the coastal landscapes observed on the journey and explore how the coastline continues to shape the people who live beside it.
